I can attest to Norton. Wouldn't let it even close to my puter.
It's right up there with AOL in my book as one of the most hated programs. And I second the motion to include Google Desktop. I've tried it a couple times because I like Google but what a hog!

The problem with testing Google Desktop is it requires real-life usage for it to start slowing down. It needs real documents and gubbins to scan through and I've got a feeling any synthetic test I try and run won't accurately reflect.
I need to start checking out which software is going to feature in the next batch of tests but I'll be sure that Google Desktop search makes it on there... I'll just have to find a way to accurately test it now =)

Check out Nero by
nero.com
It costs US $79.99 and is worth every penny.
I have no affiliation with them, i just love the program.
Still there is
a cheaper tool that's not as time consuming,
you can take a look at it by
searching google
dvd
backup.
It is not a turtle, bot not a rocket as well.

I'm a completely non-tech savy being, the last time I tried to clean up my system from wayward applications and programs that I care not about, I killed my precious photoshop program, now I use GimpShop. ;_;
When I press cnrtl-alt-delete I always see a huge list of programs going in the processes list, they temp me to delete them so they can viciously bite through another one of my favorite programs.
When I start my computer and sign in, it takes ten minutes or so before my darling laptop will bring up anything heavier than solitare, but once the programs come up they are fine, so I'm pretty sure it's that long list of processes that's doing the damage. Just today it took a total of thirty minutes, which spurred me to go and do something about it. Even now as I type, the words aren't staying in synche with my typing, the blinking bar freezes and I wait for it to catch up with me and correct mistakes.
Is there a list of programs that are commonly pre-installed, but not necessary? That was what I was looking for when I came here.
Also, you said that you refuse to use anti-virus software and such, and I do use the latest version of Norton, I'd be glad to delete it so I can bring my laptop to rights again, but how do you protect yourself from viruses, malware, and spyware without an anti-virus software?

Lamentha: I wrote about methods I use
in another post.
It's quite long winded and there are a few pages to it but in essence it's all about recognising security threats before you computer gets anywhere near them.
If you have a lot of things gunking up your system, it might be best to give it a reinstall and installing one of the better (and freer) antivirus programs on your system. Different people prefer different things. If you look through the comments of this thread and
its sequal
, you should see other users' recommendations.
Not being a user, I'm not comfortable recommending individual AVs. All I can supply are their respective performance results.

My biggest XP-Pro delay is waiting for a wireless connection. It takes as long as two minutes for the connection after the desktop has displayed. The strange thing is that AVG somehow has the ability to download updates before the connection is established enough for a web browser.

hi i work for a signwriting company and have always had alot of fonts on this computer. recently the number of fonts has got to around 10,000 and i am sure this is the cause of my computer to be slow. and as it would be a massive pain in the bum to remove them one by one, the ones i didnt want, i was wondering if there was another way to solve this problem?

I used to have norton on my laptop, and yes, it did slow it down greatly.
I noticed that Windows gets slower, and slower, and slower, the more you use it.
However, i have gone onto Linux. I am only 14, and my ICT teacher advised me not to swich, saying "It is not realy a good Operating System for someone of your age. It's fairl complacated to use."
However, I am Gifted and Talented in Computers, and my ICTlevel test showed i had the knowlege of ICT as "Expert" (I got 99.8%) And equal to a level 11 in UK KS3 grades (Thats about A+++ in USA terms).
So i tryed this Linux (Ubuntu) and i can say it is the most exeptional Operating System I have ever uses. Now, I am 14, and like gameing. This is a problem (at first) with Linux. However, i got most of my games running on Wine (No, i did not feed my computer alchohol so it thought it was running on Windows (it didn;t crash and come up with fatal errors))
So Whether you are a boaring office user, or an execting harcore gamer, Linux seems best in my Opinion. (and please don;t think i don't know what i am on about just because of my age. It's ageist lol :-D
Visit Ubuntu

Hi.. I found a free program (
WinGuard Pro
). I has features that restrict software installs, downloads, file operations etc. This is useful in controlling the amount of cr*p people install etc, thus helping maintain a healthy PC. Another tip, I think the bigger your harddrive fills up the slower it takes to find things. Best to limit what is installed. I'm also tring not to uninstall anything unless I have to, to try and cut back on fragmentation. I dunno!
