Good article! Look forward to your follow up article on further testing. I have known for a long time that Norton was very bad about bring a computer to its knees and putting numbers to it shows that it true. Quickbooks would be a good app to see what it does on slowing a system down.

Regards,
Kevin

Thank you very much.

Wow!

I was awestruck to see just how much Norton slowed down that comp!

I was googleing to see whether the Macromedia MX Studio 2004 would slow down my computer (because I like my main computer to lean and fast, and my secondary one hordes all the 'ware) and I was pleased with the result, and will install tonight!

Great research -- I really appreciate people who do all this for completely free, don't even nag for money. Great!

PS: I've noticed McAfee Site Adviser has not yet rated this site! What a shame :(

I know Norton slows down bootup, and other certain internet activities, so whats your point? I mean, nothing slows down bootup, and other activities more than Norton, is a blue screen, system hang, or system error, which I never seem to have, when Norton is installed. I'll take the trade off!

Your image is false. I have a trial copy of Norton that came with my new computer and it runs fine, no slow down at all. My games run at blazing fast frame rates with minimal lag.

Seriously, stop making stuff up about Norton, it's not a bad program, you just need common sense and have to set up net restrictions for it. Then it's fine.

Making things up?

Sorry this wasn't me trying to prove anything was the slowest. All tests were completed as equally as possible without any bias.

Wonderful article. I learned many things that I didn't know before. This is a perfect example of how to make a review that uses simple tools to create results that can make a real difference in peoples life. If you compare this article to the last 34.000 reviews of almost identical motherboards (speed difference 1-2%) you easily see that Oli is the true hero of the pc-using masses. Please create some sort of follow-up article, it would be very interesting.

Gotta say, the advice on not installing an anti-virus package may not be the best. Consider Windows is targeted frequently online; consider most people use their PCs online; consider there are good, free alternatives to Norton (such as AVG Free). Maybe test an alternative such as this (well, retrospectively anyway) and recommend it instead. Better to be protected and a little slower, rather than infected and broken! Otherwise, top review - thanks :)

Could you check using Windows OneCare (http://safety.live.com/).

Although a lot more work would need to be don eto show statistical significance, it is interesting to see how much Microsoft comes in near the top. Antivirus software is a result of MS's design of windows, and poor font management again due to windows. Openoffice shows stronger than MS Office. Nice to see that Gaim comes in as the fastest IM client, and an aggregator at that. Ditch your AIM, YIM, MSM and roll it all into Gaim.
