What Slows Windows Down?

Page 1: Introduction

The first of two studies carried out in September 2006 showing what types of software and more interestingly which versions of those types make Windows XP slow down.

Introduction

Any computer user that's owned and installed software onto their computer knows that the more you install, the slower the beast runs. Most also know that it's not just quantity and that what you install plays a large factor in how slowly your computer runs.

The aim of this article is to find out what types of application slow down a computer the most. I'm going to be measuring the“speed” as the time it takes to shutdown, restart and get back to desktop (with auto-login) and start an application in the computer's start-up settings.

The Process

To make sure the tests are fair, I installed XPSP2a Professional (release1) onto a Microsoft VirtualPC 4 (sp1) virtual machine and cloned the hard disk images for each test I'm going to run. Each VM will be running on its own, without any other applications running on the host operating system except notepad, so I can record the results.

To measure performance, I'm going to be using Microsoft BootVis, an application to time the load-times of each element of the system so users can remove the offending items or otherwise disable things that are taking too long. BootVis will tell me how long the system takes to boot from start to finish and I shall deduct the time the fresh install takes to boot.  I will then have a percentage delay that each application adds to the system.

I'm going to run each test three times and take the mean to eradicate any discrepancies.

What Should This Show Us?

By seeing how much the text install slows down compared to the clean install, we have a clear metric to see how much damage one application is doing. This way you can best judge what to not install (if you can avoid it) in order to keep peak performance on your computer.

Spyware and Viruses

During the course of these tests, it's highly likely that I'm going to pick up spyware from one of the applications. This could affect the results but this is true to life. There is no detection process for these tests, and most things will have been scanned, but be aware.

I found what turned out to be a MASSIVE bug in the site programming... That is why there was sucha problem with the server a few hours ago.

Its now working pretty well and I've turned commenting back on (Along with KittenAuth v2 incase you haven't seen it) so please leave me a note if you like what's going on or you have other suggestions for the tests.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be running an extra batch of tests some time soon, so attach yourself to the RSS feed and I'll post an update soon enough.

Yeah I've had to turn off the commenting for a bit... It turns out the KittenAuth v2 design is still a little heavy on the processing and bandwidth side of things to start having it display at the bottom of every page, regardless of people needing it.

For now, if you want to tell me how much you liked it, please use the contact form (on the navigation menu) and I'll get back to you as quickly as possible. Alternatively you can use the Donate button (also over there) and I'll get back to you twice, if not three, times as fast =P

I've had a lot of very grrovy suggestions for what to do to extend this testing, including (but definately not limited to) some of the following applications:
- A couple more AV/spyware suites (Winows Live OneCare)
- "Standalone" antivirus versions (Nod32, Trend, AVG, Avast, Panda, Norton, McAfee and Kaspersky)
- Anti Spyware Programs (Spybot, Spy Sweeper, AdAware)
- More programming libraries (Perl, Python)
- More office apps (Acrobat *shudder*, MS Office 2007 Beta 2 (if I can find where I put it))
- Media apps like Winamp, VLC and WMP
- A few more messenger applications (mIRC and Miranda)
- And a few other things that I'm going to keep a suprise

There's also going to be a bit of testing done on what you can *do* to your computer that will speed it up or bring it crawling to a halt. I'm going to need tips on what to include here, so if you know something that's supposed to speed up Windows or know of something that can slow it down, please get in touch.

Ok I've turned comments back on this time after a lot of hefty programming and improving the site code.

I'm currently getting the software together for the next test and that should appear within a few days. If you'd like something else, please post here or use the contact page... and remember to read my previous post before suggesting something =)

Cheers

Hi there.
The Font Thing is still the very best software on Microsoft Windows to handle the fonts, plus ? it's free.
It allow you to keep your fonts in directories, order and search in your fonts and to install and uninstall with only two click the wanted fonts.
With this soft you can browse your fonts without having them installed and with no slowdown :)

I have found repeatedly that RegScrubXP (free) makes a marked significance in reduced boot time. I wholeheartedly endorse its use.

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your article and found it very informative. I myself experienced some serious system slowdowns with Norton Anti-virus and have since moved to Nod32 which has made an immense difference!

I also wanted to let you know that I posted your article as a link to my "Weekly 7" on my blog at: http://www.followsteph.com/2006/09/12/weekly-7-11/

Regards,
Steph
