I agree 100% with Mr. Mike (#9). Plus, I think this test is not fair & should be repeated considering the following:
1. Split the test into 3 or more categories depending on the functionalities of each of the AV software. For instance: you can't compare "AVG 7.1 free edition" with "Norton security Center" or "Norton 360"! The former is very basic AV (their website advises you to buy the comprehensive protection which is "AVG Internet Security". While "AVG Internet Security" contains additional features not available in the basic free edition such as firewall, anti-spy, anti-spam, web-surfing protection ...etc, and this version is the one that should be compared against Norton & Mcafee latest AV products.
2. Consider putting the latest version of each AV to the test such as "Norton 360 v2".
3. To get accurate results: a windows image must be created before the first AV installation. And an image-restore must be done between AV tests. This is necessary because some AVs might leave active traces/services behind which may affect other AVs.
4. Some AVs like Norton's scan within compressed files by default while others make it optional. This affects the test very much and should be considered. This is an example of some settings -smong others- that must be equalized before performing the test.
Note: I use "Norton 360" & admit that it slows my PC although not that much because I have a powerful machine but I am considering other speedy AVs to gain that extra power consumed by Norton AV.

Mamoon,
1. Why? I semi agree that you should only be comparing like-for-like when choosing which software - but there's too much differentiation. Some thing would end up in their own category, which helps nobody. The reader should be the one to make this editorial decision and by the looks of it, you've noticed that apps offer different things and you know that it's not fair to take my figures and say that
X is better than Y because it's faster
.
2. I'll be publishing results as soon as I can find the time to do all the tests.
3. That's what I did and that's one reason testing takes so damned long.
4. As per answer #1, I'm not comparing normalised installs because that's not what you find in the wild. Most people don't tweak around.
Another reason for not splitting these all up is: do you need "360 degree" protection? I used Windows full-time for at least 6 years with absolutely no memory-resident antivirus solution - and I didn't catch a thing (verified by biannual online scans). If I can get by on a router, a good browser, patches and common sense, why can't more people?

Why do you guys put up with all that sh*t?
More like how can you put up with a machine that can't even run simple things like Word, Excel etc

Alex, I'm not sure which OS you're saying can't run Word but OSX
can
run it (MS release a special edition just for Macs) and Linux has a few office suites available with the front-runner being Open Office.
I use Linux full time now - just as many other people do. Swathes of people use Macs. Do you really think any of us would have stopped using Windows if we couldn't do things we wanted to?

Hey Oli, just wanted to thank you for this article, it's great. I'm trying to figure out why my parents' computers have gotten so slow - cleaned up startup/services, defragged, ran checkdisk. Next steps are a registry cleanup, trying different anti-virus software, and new hard drives. It'll be interesting to see what works. This article definitely helps!
BTW, I'll second (third/fourth) the request for kaspersky. If you ever have time, of course - I can't imagine all this testing is fast!

Well I actually found this article useful, you see I was out of town for a long time on business. I get back and after getting comfortable, and relaxed, I wanna get online. Right? Wrong! I keep getting popups and all kinds of junk. Turns out my little brother was doing the nasty's to himself on bad websites and downloading crappy porn, and messing up my computer. So here I am. And I think I'll probably just go on a download spree and get this pc cleaned up. Thanks for the INFO.
