I think Windows firewall has come on a long way, and I am behind a decent firewall on my Netgear Router. So i'll just be using AVG from now on. I have had McAfee on this computerfor 3 months and it's driven me mad, so it's going.

Good article, i'm glad I own a mac and thus don't have any requirement for these anti-virus applications. The one feature of my mac that I love is that I have over a hundred apps installed and yet it still boots up in less than 10 seconds from cold. I wonder tho, if there are any apps for mac which extend that. It would be interesting to see a similar article on what really slows down osx ;)

Im reading this on the 26th November 2007. Are the above issues resolved, and is there another thread somewhere that continues from the above posted 14 months ago?

After posting my message I noticed that the latest posts are placed at the bottom of the list, 8 pages in. I think it would be better to have the order reversed so that the latest posts are first.
Thanks
Steve

It's not surprising to see norton come out on top as the worst offender in each aspect, it uses up so many system resources for its self. To anyone who would concider purchasing norton, don't. It's become popular because of being bundled with pc's and computer shops selling it left right and centre but it's terrible at keeping infections out, finding them and then fixing them. You're much better off with free programs like AVG/Avast, Zone Alarm Free and Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware.

Your brain is the best av.
Don't open attachments, download files from random sites or visit adult sites. Also use p2p sensibly, like getting linux distros and not for copyrighted material.

I just want to get rabio searchenhancer out of my machine. I surely will not go to the Rabio website to do that. Any help would be appreciated. Most of my protection devices remove it, but then it recurs on startup......Thanks.

I've been using Norton 2007 for almost a full year now and it works great. I only have four-year-old computer with 512mb of ram and recently, I noticed that my computer was getting really slow. So I switched out the bloated versions of Office 2003 and Nero 7 with their Lite versions (a fraction of the size). I used Evidence Eliminator to clear out the not-fully-deleted clutter on the drive. Then I used RegCure to clean the registry as well as disable a lot of useless startup programs. Finally, I disabled Norton Automatic Updates which I now do manually instead. Now my system runs twice as fast and it's much better for it.

Another great program I just found is RemoveIT Pro. It finds Spyware, Malware, Virus, Worms, Trojan's and Adware
that other AV programs can miss. And best of all, it's simple, fast, and free (well, there's a $15 Enterprise version but if you know where to look, there's also RemoveIt Pro v4 - SE (Free for non commercial use) which works perfectly. I used it on another computer infected with W32 startup viruses and it found, cleaned, and removed them all, something other programs could not do. If you can find the free version, download it immediately and scan your computer. You might be surprised at what it finds...

Thanks for the article guys. One thing NIS2008 does is a QuickScan on bootup- I for one am Happy it does a quickie virus check.

Straight answer is: EVERYTHING!
New question: "What Slows Linux Down?"
Straight Answer is: NOTHING !!
