Glad my computer doesn't need any of that crappy antivirus, spyware garbage...
its a Mac, and sweet as a nut.
Why do you guys put up with all that sh*t?

Typicl reply from a Mactard, and the main reason why people don't buy MAC's

I showed your data to a person over at HardOCP in the OS forum and he is claiming your data is BS and that it is common sense that AV progs don't cause a performance hit. Funny guy.

Yo JonT - Your precious widdle Macy-wacky is increasingly getting the attention of the hacker/virus community. There are now viruses for Mac. As John McClane in Die Hard yells "Welcome to the party, Pal!" So much for Apple's - and your own - smugness. (pttbh! sound)

There's no debate that Norton is a beast of a program; however, something you may want to consider doing in order to boost your PCs performance is using a Vista Registry Cleaner. You see, over time by installing and uninstalling software on your comp. many unnecessary files are left behind in your computer's registry, the brain of operations. Your registry is what tells the rest of your computer including your browser how to function properly, when this gets clogged with unneeded files you get a slow, freezy, errory, crappy computer.

You only tested one firewall and the free version of ZoneAlarm is not the best out there, even for the price. ;-)

I would recommend including Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.22.349 or later in the next round of testing. It's the only FREEware firewall that earns a 95%/73, 10+, Excellent rating at Matousec's Firewall Challenge. Online Armor Personal Firewall 2.1.0.131 FREE also beat out the PAID version of ZoneAlarm Pro with 89%/73, 10, Very Good... just 1% point below Excellent, and the paid version of Online Armor boosted that 89% to a near perfect 98%, achieving an Excellent rating, although it only made it to level 10 without passing all tests, as Commodo did with a 10+.

Even ZoneAlarm Pro 2009 8.0.020.000 only earned 86%/73, 10+, Very Good. You can just imagine how far down the list ZoneAlarm Free would have been.

BTW, the reason I would like to see a better firewall tested is that your research seems to support the idea of replacing the Norton Security Suite with more efficient "best of breed" for A/V, A/S and Firewall, as well as banner ad and popup blockers. NOD32 seems to be a no-brainer for the A/V in both effectiveness and performance, SpySweeper is a fairly obvious choice for A/S, but Commodo seems to be the best of breed FREE solution for effectiveness (and nearly matches the best PAID products), but we need to be able to compare its performance.

I would also be interested in how Sunbelt's new Vipre compares. Perhaps it could replace NOD32 and SpySweeper for use with Commodo. "VIPRE combines antivirus, antispyware, anti-rootkit, anti-malware and other security technologies into a seamless, tightly-integrated security solution." However, I haven't seen third-party comparatives of Vipre for its effectiveness in protecting vs malware yet.

Hi,
Loaded a Armorall as step up from ZoneAlarm and my system seemed to go south from there. Excessive startup time and other slowness issues... Uninstalled it with some improvement but still pretty tanked. Also installed and used Bitdefender and uninstalled that as well when that didn't help... Tried RegCure but can't get it installed and can't get their helpdesk to acknowledge my existance. So me and Bill Slowski are going thru your suggestions, one step at a time. Thanks for being out here, hope I find a solution...

The boot delay and IO performance problem has become worse in the last two years. Removing Norton/McAfee makes your Vista PC sing. I would love to see the same tests run again with current software (Vista, Norton 08...)
