"something too many of us we take for granted" I am in shock you would write this in the second sentence on an article about grammar.

Heh - that's what happens when you rewrite things: mistakes slip in >_<

Where is the kittenauth code? Somehow it's decidedly difficult to find on this site ... which is a shame :(

Oh how I love the introduction, I am tempted to copy and paste to "boatdesign.net" where, in the "dungeons" non-boating discussion is vibrant.

I had completely forgotten my membership/registration, I will return when I figure out how to start a new thread. I hope to commence with a discourse on my experiences with Linux. This OS is maturing and with included applications, access to drivers and growing support from manufacturers there is no excuse to do otherwise...

Oh Dear,

I bet your Father was on your case you whole young life. Mine was.
Jolly good point though, only I doubt whether those dreadful people who insist on fastidiously forming foully framed footnotes will take much notice.

P.S. I mostly just want to c teh kittehs :-P

Aaaa Ooooo, here is where I get booted for swearing - Sorry to disappoint you I am a bastard - no father, or if you don't believe that then the only option left is JC?

So where the fools who still use windoze? and who are the proponents for a sensible and more robust Operating System - the best option so far is the one initiated out of need by Linus Torvolds - now recognised and supported globally by thousands of dedicated enthusiasts and known as Linux and its hundreds of flavours.... Tried some of them yet?

Ubuntu is a safe option for all you windows retards who have difficulty thinking for yourselves, and it comes with a "religious" version for Christians, and for Muslims soon - now ain't that nice and friendly... As we all should be.

There is within the "Ubuntu" camp, other flavours for schools and children with a capacity for locking "distractions out" that Microsoft can only dream about. also a scientific version, a studio version for those in to composing and creating their own music / videos / animation etc....

I have also heard of a flavour that looks and behaves like windows should (I am not interested)

My flavour, because I am lazy is Linux Mint. Current version is "Daryna" and I can confidently recommend this one. Just plug everything in to your computer, turn them on and start the computer with the downloaded 'iso' CD in the drive and your bios set up so the computer will boot from there. It is almost that simple...

Check out distrowatch.com and do a bit of research for yourself first. Don't just believe my, dummy. Get of your butt and do some learning. Not much, just enough... enjoy.

Intermediate: pluralising acronyms
One very common mistake you'll see all around the internet: people squeezing in thoroughly unwanted apostrophes onto shortened words, accompanied by an S to pluralise them.
------------------------------

See Mr. Dave Barry's comments on pluralization:

Dear Mister Language Person: What is the purpose of the apostrophe?

Answer: The apostrophe is used mainly in hand-lettered small business signs to alert the reader that an "S" is coming up at the end of a word, as in: WE DO NOT EXCEPT PERSONAL CHECK'S, or: NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ITEM'S.

Another important grammar concept to bear in mind when creating hand-lettered small-business signs is that you should put quotation marks around random words for decoration, as in "TRY" OUR HOT DOG'S, or even TRY "OUR" HOT DOG'S.

Crazy Americans, revert to Spanish or French before you destroy any semblance of the appropriate use of English in rantings posted herein.

Oli,

It's nice to find someone actually showing an interest in correct grammar. I suggest adding the use of the word "couple" to your tutorial.

Couple is a noun, not an adjective. It's a synonym for pair, meaning a quantity of two. The meaning has been loosened to mean any small quantity, not just two, but it is still a quantity and a noun. There is a tendency for many people to drop the "of". after couple, but the correct adjective would be "few".

Correct: I had a couple of beers tonight. I had a few beers tonight

Wrong: I had a couple beers tonight.

While I appreciate the sentiment motivating your post Oli, I take umbrage at the unnecessary "Yank-bashing". North American English is a recognised dialect of the English language. Residents of the UK do not hold a monopoly on proper English usage or spelling.

As an American-born Australian who regularly encounters English as spoken by people from the UK, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada, and the USA, it is primarily the British English themselves who consistently bastardise their mother tongue yet feel compelled to criticize other for similar transgressions.

A little tolerance, and informed understanding, goes a long way
