One could argue that "centre" is a bastardization of "center". I really don't see how the British spelling makes any sense; the "tre" looks like it's supposed to be pronounced in the same fashion as it is in "tree".

There are a lot of words the USA can't spell correctly. I got a lot of my school work returned to me with spelling corrections. A few of my teachers just accepted that I was Canadian and stopped trying to correct me :) I have even used Colour in HTML and scratched my head wondering why it wasn't working.

"centre" is another example of English showing its mongrel nature. It comes, of course, from the French word of the same spelling and meaning, which doesn't have a silent e at the end.

Awesome catches there gnudoc! Shorted is another example of my being clumsy. It is a word (eg: I shorted the circuit), but it's not what I was looking for.

I would also suggest proof-reading articles before posting, so that all the required words are actually there and in the right order.

I don't believe that the verb "to short" as in "I shorted the circuit", exists at all. It's a colloquialism. Short-circuit is a "word", a Noun. It's verbal form is "To short-circuit". E.g: I short-circuited.

Maybe am I being a bit of a prick here, but I think you deserve it for what I perceived as mis-placed arrogance. Grammar and you are obvioulsy not so well acquainted, so please don't give give lessons.

Not a comprehensive article, but adherence to the principles described in it would almost certainly make the internet an easier thing to read. You might include some links to good grammar websites. This is on of my personal favorites.
