By the way, I forgot to mention that I find both communities to be fabulous, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. This was a critical factor for me in choosing a distro. I always managed to find help setting up my video card and homepna connection, particularly with the Ubuntu community. But again, I found both communities excellent and an important factor in selecting these two distros over others.

Excellent for a beginner like me, particularly because it connects very easily to the internet via a usb broadband modem and Tiscali.
I have tried Ubuntu but was unable to connect to the internet with a USB modem. Instructions for doing this are horrendous for a beginner. There is however an excellent book written about Ubuntu, for non geeks.
If someone reading this is clever enough to do it we need either to update Ubuntu to accommodate usb modems or get a book written about PCLinux 2007 for non Geeks. The online tutorials are helpful but a non geek book on PCLinux 2007 is badly needed.
I can't compare PCLinux with Ubuntu without both of the above.

Whoever is telling this is only another distribution, let me tell you all: This is the best linux desktop I've ever seen. I have tried ubuntu, mepis, fedora, mandriva et altri... No match.
Best graphics and best browser configuration of all. My nvidia card and 19 inch widescreen viesonic monitor worked fine the first time. Hardware detection is great, no limitations. I hope more people start using it.

I didn't find this review very helpful, informative, or objective. The only way this review could be helpful is if someone looking for opinions on this distro realized how hard the author had to dig for negatives, and chalked that up as a plus. Way too much nitpicking. I'm not sure what the author's beef is with this distribution, but it seem he set out to write a negative review before testing the distro.
One thing that would make the review more helpful is, where something negative is said, compare it to another distro that does this particular thing right.
I will agree that the installation isn't all that polished. The time zone thing, for example, is kind of weird. I also ran into some hitches with partitioning, but that was due to me looking at the wrong set of instructions - I didn't use the ones right there on desktop. But the installation is completely functional if not always logical and pleasing to the senses. So long as its functional, I'm not going to complain about the install utility - I want to know about the distro itself. Not enough time was spent on that in this review.
Also, just an aside, and this coming from a Linux novice, I think the partitioning part should be a little complex - dumb it down and you still run the risk of newbs zooming through on auto-pilot and they can still inadvertantly foul something up. So its a toss up. Now I'm being nit-picky.
Pclos is the third distribution I've tried. Ubuntu has served me well for the better part of a year, openSUSE was a disaster for me, and pclos was the smoothest install with the least amount of having to fiddle to get things to work in my limited experience. As far as I can remember, everything just worked right outside of the box - no drivers to add, no tweaking, nothing of the sort, and beryl/compiz worked completely as soon as I enabled them - and my machine has a ATI card.
Bottom line, great distro in my opinion, the review could use some work. Thanks for writing it none the less.

I don't know what planet you're living on or what Linux Distro you reviewed, but it sure wasn't PCLINUXOS! I have been trying to find a usable Linux Distro to replace Windows XP for over 3 months now. I tried Linspire. What a piece of crap. It kept freezing up, causing me to have to reboot constantly. I couldn't get on the internet no matter how I configured the thing. You talk about hard to configure, you haven't used Linspire. I tried Open Suse and found it to be junk. I tried a couple of others but Ubuntu 10 was the only one I could get on the internet with. Other than that I could do nothing with it. I tried everything in the world to install a program and couldn't make it happen. When I found PCLinuxOS, I found the best Linux distro out there, I don't care what you say. If a computer illiterate like me could partition the hard drive with no trouble, you need to go back to computer school, mate. The interface is absolutely gorgeous, there are over 5000 software titles to choose from. THE THING WORKS AND REVIVALS VISTA IN APPEARANCE AND EXCEEDS THE LOOKS OF MS XP PROFESSIONAL. This was the most unfair review I have ever read on the internet. I don't think you really took a good look at this product. These people have only been out for four years and look at what they have accomplished. UTBUNTU has the ugliest interface of any distro I have seen. PCLinuxOS is so good, if I were Bill Gates, I would be worried. FOLKS, don't pay any attention to this review, try the product and you'll see what a dunce NUMERO UNO is..........HA NUMERO ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oscar, I'm not here to say what PCLOS is better than in every respect (don't post yet, keep reading). Other distributions do some things better (in my opinion), and I have qualified these instances, telling you which parts are better. They aren't blanket statements - they're critical review, as much for new users as the development team.
Can you defend the organisation of the K menu? How about the LiveCD's slightly odd order of asking you information? How about the timezone-selection looking like it was sorted by a chimpanzee?
People have different experiences with things. The biggest separator is probably how the computer is set up in respect to hard disks. I have a fairly complex system and Draklive-installer just isn't suited for it without having a Ph.D in partitioning. Other systems cope better with it. On simple systems, the reverse is probably true, where Draklive-installer may be perfect for the job and the others are overkill.
I'd love to throw you on a system with 2 separate RAID arrays on and ask you how simple you thought the installer was.
Did I say that the graphics were disgusting to look at? No. I used words like ''lovely'' and ''stunningly crisp'' - I like them. In other posts I've heavily criticized Ubuntu for its crapesque, orange-brown, muddy horribleness because I agree with you - they aren't pleasant but fortunately they're one of the easiest thing to change in any distribution of Linux.
I'm thrilled that you like PCLOS (like many people do) and you're now a full time Linux user. I'm happy that you wrote a response to the post but you're trying to counter arguments I haven't made here, Oscar.
HA NUMERO ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am trying to use PCLOS gnome (latest version) and i am very hapy with it, being a Linux user and wanting to get away from MS. BUT i have a small problem, it does not like my wirless card on my Mitac laptop. I have tried some other linux like unbutu and Mepis, i like pclos best.
does anyone know how to fix this problem (and please remember that i am not a linux programmer and new to the game).
Thanks
Paul
