I installed PCLinuxOS 2007 3 days ago, and i'm overall, well pleased with my experience.
Having used several 'nix distors in the past, i was getting fed up with the bloatwarez in a lot of them, and i'm ALWAYS looking for a K.I.S.S. distro. I find this the best of the bunch so far, all my initial issues have been solved (kernel upgrade solved a dvd-rom issue, system upgrade solved a few others , minor i may add. I was disspointed at the slowness of repositories, however this may be due to the fact that this has become one HOT distro).
Wine has run flawlessly too, i may add making it easier to have ONLY PCLOS on this system, instead of the tiresome dual booting. My preference would to be seeing more software in the repositories, also.
Overall, i'll give my KUDOS to Texstar and his gang for coming up with a highly stable, and easily functional Distro of Linux (btw last look it's 3# on distrowatch and climbing still.)

Your wrong about our Community Support, imo. pclinuxos has really good support, even though our numbers are small, help is nothing more than a few hours away. the users at pclinuxos support actually know what there doing, unlike massive numbers which contains members that don't really know what there talking about(they are not bad people, they just don't know what they are talking about) my install was flaw-less, all hardware detected, no hangs, no nags, everything wrong straight out of the box. the install was flawless, install wizard worked fine for me, i didn't even have to look at 1 partition table to do anything, i just gave my hard drive to pclinuxos and it is working fine. if you don't want to partition, don't install linux because almost ALL LINUX DISTROS need partition info(this includes every one's favorite ubuntu). You mainly just compared pclinuxos to ubuntu, which is different for everyone. Ubuntu had trouble for me out of the box, it was hard to find settings(like connecting to the internet via dail up virturally doesn't exists in ubuntu) and when i went to the forums for help, i never got help with my ubuntu help, while i had plenty of help with pclinuxos. I do agree with the fact there seems to be some missing programs and the menu sux, but other than that, it's really good.

Alright, I agree with the Head Honcho that the partitioning section of the the installer sucks. Big time, IMO. But that's about the only thing I can find to fault this excellent distro. Everything worked, and has continued to work after the install, and that's a FIRST as far as I am concerned - but then I have only fumbled with computers for 15 years; maybe it was my turn to be lucky.

Ubuntu installs flawlessly on my Gigabyte system too, but then I need a week or so to tweak software into reasonable behaviour. Doable, but not much fun.

PCLinux is the best computing experience I have had in years. If the guys behind it keep up their good work, I may perhaps be able to get rid of Winblows and OS/2 for good, although I will probably let Winsuck sit here and catch virus a little while longer.

You did delete my post. There was NO profanity in what I posted. Unfortunately, I didn't take a screenshot of what I did post. But now how is anyone going to believe what you say about not deleting posts. And, yes I'm going to take a screenshot of what I'm posting here and if you delete what I'm entering here then I'll make sure to post about it elsewhere.

Respectfully,

yes, and now I can eat my own words, I'm an idiot, and my apologies. I just realized I had posted on the 'militant' thread. Again, my bad. Now I'll just tuck my tail, and go back to playing Tremulous.

Just an update really: Now we've managed to get the base distribution out (remember PCLinuxOS is created by a very small team) new packages are hitting the repositories thick and fast. We're up to 6570 packages at present. And every one is on our own repositories.

People may remember why we had to rebuild PCLinuxOS from scratch, because the compilers we had been using were obselete. This was allowed to happen because we don't want our users to have to re-install every few months. The idea is that users will be able to update from one version to the next just by running Synaptic and hitting "Mark All Upgrades > Apply" and we want this to last for years. That means sticking with the compilers we have until they need replacing.

Consequently all packages were rebuilt, the base system recreated. Getting PCLinuxOS 2007 out was just the beginning. Now we can add to it, improve it.

Yes, several packages still are not rebuilt for 2007 yet. They will be soon. Scripts will be hacked and improved to sort out the issues that people are having (where this is possible -- we all know that some hardware just won't work on Linux and some is extremely awkward), we can do all this on top of the base system that is PCLOS2007. So if we're getting this much attention now, well, we ain't finished yet.

firstly i would like to say i am compleatly new to using Linux so bear with me, i have a Dell inspiron 1501, i noticed in the news all the coverage of the Dell <> Ubuntu partnership so decided to give Ubuntu a try, i managed to get a copy from a news agents and booted it up, it looked ok if you like a chocolate coloured desktop (yuk) my audio card didn't work, i couldn't get on the net, but i decided to install anyway as duel boot hoping i would be able to sort these problems out later, i was completely lost with the partitioner so needed help from a more experienced friend who also struggled, but unfortunately windows and Ubuntu failed to boot, so i reinstalled windows and tried again, but again it failed,
another friend then suggested i should try PCLinuxOS,
i was very reluctant to try Linux again but as i was getting a dab hand at installing windows i thought why not. after all i had already lost all my pics etc, yes i know i should have backed it all up but i made a mistake,
it booted up without a hitch to a terrific looking screen, and everything worked that I needed, including my audio card and ethernet card, i clicked install and 1/2 later i was checking windows to make sure i hadn't messed it up again, a quick reboot and i was looking at my newly installed Linux desktop feeling very chuffed with myself,
in conclusion as a complete novice Ubuntu didn't work PCLinuxOS does, in fact it works so well i decided to reinstall and use the whole hard disc, i don't know what other Linux operating systems are like, and to be honest I'm not even curious to find out, PCLinux does it for me.

I played with TR3 and was impressed. It was the first KDE distro which I felt like keeping, faster than Kubuntu, almost as speedy as Xubuntu. I cut my GNU/Linux teeth on Mandriva, so it was nice to have some of the better familiar Mandrake stuff back, without the dreadful stuff (package management, ugly graphics, silly Club memberships). I love Synaptic/apt-get, it's become a killer point for me.

I'll stick with Ubuntu, aside from playing with PCLinux 2007 Final on a spare machine, but what I'm really sticking with is GNOME, Synaptic and Debian's repos. I can foresee PCLinuxOS getting KDE share from Kubuntu.

It will be a pity if users of two such excellent and user-friendly distros keep slagging off the other distro and its users. Any energy left after ridiculing Microsoft should be directed at those distros and their geekocrats which make life so difficult for folk to switch to Linux.

OK, I agree, great distro. Only seems the software database is not so big, one of the repos on synaptic (the last) is not available, and I cannot find some of the programs I use to run on my Linux.
Also, tried to install truecrypt, all seems OK, I've created a container, but cannot mount, say truecrypt kernel not found.
I wander if the installer can calculate the dependency correctly.
