Had you bothered to use the PCLOS forums and it's search functions all of your complaints/faults would be rendered mute.
Really? Searching the forums will automatically make the K Menu better? Will it make the installer naturally more intuitive?

To suggest that PCLOS should work the same way your personal favorite system works ...
It's not that at all. From all the distros and operating systems I've used, it's very clear to me what makes things simple or easy.

When I compare things against other distributions, I'm saying: They've done it better. Learn from others. The installer and the menu are both things that I think have been done better elsewhere. Why should I leave that out of my review?

Bryan457: Yes apt-get is good for that =)

bretzel: When did I compare this against Windows or OSX? Why are you even mentioning MS?

I mention other distributions because althrough they're different, many people looking at this are looking for a Linux desktop. The comparison is fair. They share common elements and common problems and some deal with them better than others.

Dear Reviewer,
Frankly spoken, I would like to ask you what do you think yourself about your 'review'? What did you really want to say with it? Which type of audience you wanted to address? IMHO, you made empty shallow 'blah-blah-blah'!
About the PCLOS2007: great distro, right now I'm still sitting on PCLOS2007tr4, will reinstall this weekend. What I'm missing: we need Lphoto and Lsongs from Linspire - the best software in their respected categories for Linux. I'm not OS-geek, we are using software applications for work to be done. This means in general - Adobe CS3 should be ported to Linux, Corel Graphic Suite, MindManager, EndNote/ReferenceManager, any CD/DVD should be playing out-of-the-box! But this is not so much about PCLOS - congratulations to TEXSTAR and Gang, and Thank You Very Much!

If you read the introduction, you'd know what I was aiming for. The 'point' was to get an overview but also answer the question (the tagline) "Radically simple or more of the same?"

And I concluded that while it is nice and, as many people have said, they find using it more simple than walking, there are just a few aspects that I found less simple than other distributions make the same task.

PCLinux looks good!!

Thank you for the article. Based on your article I uninstalled
Ubuntu and installed PClinusOS. It works flawlessly and
has the codex's that I need. I have tried just about
every known (and unknown) distribution. I have seen
fantastic improvements over the last 5 years. This
distribution is about as good as it gets.

I have just conducted a crash course in Linux for the Navy. Guess which Linux distribution was the most preferred one? ---- > no not Ubuntu, but PCLinuxOS!!!.
This is one of the most disgusting review I have ever read and there seems to be a hidden motivation to push users away from PCLinuxOS.

OK, everybody, calm down please. Oli, I think your review is fair enough, especially the revised version, but by no means perfect. No problem, you did your best, I think. The problem with your review is that it is very superficial. You are obviously more familiar with Ubuntu and, maybe subconsciously, are a little biased towards it. A lot of us here have tried Ubuntu in a much more in depth manner than your comparative level of PCLinuxOS experience. And having done so we have found that PCLinuxOS has many qualities that make it much better than Ununtu, in our eyes. In fact, I don't know of anyone that has used both extensively that prefers Ubuntu, (as long as all hardware is equally supported). That is why your review is being viewed as flawed by many. But, again, the way I look at it is that you simply are not the greatest OS reviewer in the world. To me, that is OK.

Quote:"The installer does work but it's not all simple ...". Excuse me, author, and let me ask you a guestion (if you like to compare PCLOS to Ubuntu so much) but do you think that Ubuntu installation procedure is simple ? In no case ! Installation of Ubuntu (and Kubuntu , too) 7.04 is really problematic and nearly impossible for a novice.

"Not a bad distro, but there are better. Ubuntu, for example."

Well, I run a few boxs all 64bit. So I like the 64bit aps. However, pclinuxos, is very nice. unlike Ubuntu. The installer is not that great at all. If you want the installer to erase and format and already formated and partitioned drive. It will just dump out on you. The only way to do this is gpart the drive, wipe clean set up a file system, then restart the install in PC. Ubuntu, install much nicer then this. Also, if you have 2 drives, install PCLINUXOS on drive a and Ubuntu on drive B,, the grub is perfectly set to select either distro. However, since this is a PC review. The drivers and nvidia are still a problem. Xorg still has to be messed with. Newbies will never understand this. The graphics are still puffy like in windows xp, Don't get me wrong, I like PC, never could get to run on any dell laptop, but mandriva could. I am a fan of gnome, so a KDE based distro really has to scream at me. Mepis is more like that. Which I think is faster. As for forum, PCLINUX forum tends to be a not so friendly to newbies and dare to ask a question that is not part of that thead. The disciples of Texstar will let you know. Ubuntu's forum is much more informative and helpful.

Personally, when helping friends pick a linux distro, I show them PCLINUX, Mepis and Mint. Mint looks the nicest, and has all the disto's. Run on ubuntu and very user friendly
