James Bond movies have a history for product placement. Rolex submariners, Omega Seamasters and more. Those who can read german, can it here on the James Bond article.

Yes this sort of thing has already slipped into gaming. Quite a few FPS I play now have randomly rotated billboards that display ads. It is a definite buzz kill and takes away from the experience imho. I also get a little sick to the stomach when I see blatant advertising like the stuff you've pointed out in this movie. BUT this is nothing new and has been happening for a long time now. I mean, how many freakin pepsi ads did I have to endure in all those 80's movies, but who cares, I don't drink pepsi because of them and I hope you don't either. And I hope you don't buy a vaio or a sony ericsson phone just because you see them in this movie. I hope you think for yourself and don't let advertising subtle or otherwise effect you. good luck.

Great article! I really like the Sony Vaio ones because I thought Mac had cornered the market on any laptops in ANY form of visual entertainment! Seriously 99 out of 100 laptops you see are Macs (key example is Carrie in 'Sex and the City' who is virtually chained to her Mac). Like you guys, it's not going to make me race out and buy a new Mac but it really grates my cheese just how obvious so much advertising is these days. Still, I think being aware of these things makes all the difference! And, hey, own less! It's good for you!

Older movies and TV shows, made before product placement caught on, used purposely un-branded products - cigarette packages, beer bottles, etc., with generic labels. I always found this distractingly unrealistic. Product placement, when subtle, reinjects a level of realism previously lacking. Is it brainwashing? Of course, but look all around us; why should movies be exempt?

Sure purposely brand-free products are pretty bad but the ideal would be real products in shot but as if they were real products. Not the sorts of specially set-up shots where they keep shoving the same brands down your throat over and over again.

Especially when they're in pristine condition... Look at the completely dust and smear -free Sony phones, versus the scratched and generally beaten up Nokia used by the bomb maker near the beginning. Or the ridiculously high-spec Ford Focus. Like you'd ever get that as a rental.

I did a search for 'Too much Sony product placement' and you were top of the list. Great article, BTW. Sony is out of control. I think that much of the placement is gratuitous, possibly even written into the script. I have just finished watching the Resident Evil trilogy and all the Sony stuff was nauseating. The funny this is, though, Resident Evil is largely about a massive, evil, all powerful company. But apparently they have to contract out the making of computers and such to Sony. WTF? Is associating Sony with a big evil corporation a good thing, or just apt?
