Oli,
Ryan pointed out some shortcomings in my own implementation, and I have now a brand new one: http://www.nextbbs.com/do_topic_id_573_post_3927
Your input will be appreciated :)

As a phpBB forum admin with always some spam users to delete every day, I have implemented your great idea into the current phpBB 2.0.20 -- you can find more information and download links to a complete phpBB 2.0.20 with KittenAuth (or only changed files or patch archives) here:
http://www.artsoft.org/phpbb_ka/
I have this modification activated since a few days and no spam users since then! :-)
For a test forum to play around with test registrations using KittenAuth technology, see here:
http://staging.artsoft.org/test_forum_ka/
Thanks & Greetings,
Holger

As a matter of fact, my newspaper has requested that I try for a brief e-mail interview with you as well. I haven't been able to contact you other ways, so I'm resorting to commenting here--please e-mail me back if you're interested; I promise to keep it short.
Thanks!
