I work in an agency that had the chance to chat with the Microsoft developers behind Windows Server 2008.

I'm not sure if this works in Nautilus or not, but in many file managers you can simply begin typing a word (filename) and it will progressively filter/select the appropriate file.
That is to say, it's similar to FireFox's "Search for text when I start typing" feature. My computer running Ubuntu is currently out of commission so I am unable to test this, but I have a pretty good feeling that it works.

I've managed to dump explorer's search now. I'm not entirely happy with the arrangement, but it'll do.

Search-as-you-type is indeed one way of finding files that are already being displayed, but that doesn't help you when you have 400 nested directories. This is where the find command comes into play. It's terminal-based but it's a good tool once you know how to use it.
