Just try Ubuntu. It really is impressive. It will take some time to relearn things but it is worth it.

"For all its faults and shortcomings, I like Windows. It's an unfortunate predicament isn't it?"

It's not a predicament - it's self-imposed pain and frustration. You don't have to do this to yourself. i've used Linux since 1994 and exclusively (as the only OS in my house) since 2000. Do yourself a favour and move away from Windows.

For a job a little over a year ago i had to work with Windows software development tools to write software for WinCE platforms. i found the process so emotionally and physically painful that i quit the job after a few months. People praise the MS dev tools left and right... yet every one who praises it has never used anything but those tools and doesn't know any better. Give me xemacs, GNU Make, gcc, and a bash shell and i can run circles around nearly any Windows developer out there. Force me to sit inside MSVC and i can only crawl along with the rest of them.

The question I keep asking myself as I look jealously at the latest Linux releases is: how long will I force myself to use Windows?

I don't know from whom I've heard that but a guy set up a two machine environment, one only with Linux installed. He decided which tasks he can do on Linux and divided his machines by tasks and as time passed he realized that he spends most of the time on the Linux machine and coming back to Windows one only when he really has no choice.
Note: I don't know you nor your situation and I know the drawbacks in this suggestion, but that's all it is, a suggestion so those who are able (and willing) can try this...

I, on the other hand, somewhat naively just plunged into the Linux world - which cost me at least a week of headaches without a working graphical environment (for some reason as a newbie to all things Linux I chose Debian, lol - and that was about 2 or 3 years ago...) as I didn't bother to read enough documentation to realize my graphical card will cause me problems (which can be fixed). And I didn't have another computer at hand at that time to search the net for the solution of my problems.
But, after that week of grief and I don't know how many time of initial learning (not too much, but I'm always learning) I didn't look back nor did I miss Windows environment... (Disclaimer: YMMV ;))

Yeah it's too late for that. I've been a happyish Ubuntu user for 2 years now. It would take some major improvements on Windows' behalf to get my custom back.
